Suggested Vegetable Varieties for Indoor Container Gardens

Most vegetables that will grow in your outdoor garden will also do well in your container garden. Of course the size and space are unique to your indoor garden, but given the space and light you can grow most vegetables. But there are obviously going to be some varieties and vegetables that are better suited to most folks space constraints.

Vegetable types which are often well suited for growing in containers include vegetables which can yield well as single plants like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Other vegetables that don’t require a large number of plants include green onions, beans, lettuce, squash, radishes and parsley. Vining and climbing plants like pole beans and cucumbers can do well inside, but they do require considerably more space because of their vining growth habit.

Variety selection can make a big difference in the success of your garden. Here are some suggested varieties of vegetables which can do well indoors.

Tomatoes: Pixie, Tiny Tim, Small Fry, Patio
Peppers: Jalapeno (a Southern Favorite),Keystone Resistant Giant, Canape, (Hot) Red Cherry
Leaf Lettuce: Romaine (a salad favorite), Buttercrunch, Salad Bowl
Green Onions: Beltsville Bunching, Crysal Wax
Green Beans: Greencrop, Contender
Radishes: Cherry Belle, Scarlet Globe, Icicle
Parsley: Evergreen, Moss Curled
Cucumbers: Burpless, Liberty
Eggplant: Black Beauty, Long Tom
Squash: Gold Neck, Early Prolific Straightneck, Dixie
