The Best Compost Turning Tool | Compost Aerator

I’ve used a variety of compost aerators over the years. Starting with a simple pitchfork in the bin, after moving to a couple of barrel style composters, I found that the pitchfork didn’t really work that well. I used a couple of different styles, starting with the type that has a couple of wings flare out on the side as you pull it out through the compost.

The problem with those was that it would sometimes get a hold of too much material and it would be difficult to pull out.

Then, about 5-6 years ago I came across the Compost Crank. I don’t know where I found it, but you can find them at several retailers around the web, and I’m sure many nurseries carry them. Hand built by the people at LoTech, they are made of large stainless steel. The one I use has a metal handle, although I think the newer ones have a plastic handle.

Shaped like a large corkscrew, you simply screw it into the pile and pull out. If you engage too much material, simply “uncscrew” it until you can pull it out. It works great in a bin, in a barrel, or simply a pile. And after 5-6 years it shows no sign of wearing out.
