Black Roses - Are They Black, Blue, or Red?

Black roses are relatively rare compared to lighter colored roses like in red, yellow and white. As it turns out, these roses are not really black, but usually a deep red or almost velvet color. when they do appear because they are really a very deep red. These stunning roses are not well known, and are usually only used for special occasions. Common occasions for using black roses include special birthdays (often the 40th or 50th), or the loss of a loved one. At times they are used to mark vengeance.

Because true black roses are not to be found, often bouquets containing them use silk roses. But the dark red or velvet varieties can be found at some florists on request. To get roses that appear to be black, you may need to request specific red roses by name.

A totally black flower arrangement is not that interesting , so black roses are often mixed in a bouquet with other flowers. Often a contrasting mix of black and white roses makes a great addition to a formal setting.

Black roses often appear in stories and fairy tales. Roses are often symbols of love and beauty, but the color black is often used to symbolize evil or mourning. Another common use if for a “Gothic” theme.

A few rose varieties that can be almost black include:

Black Bacarra
Dan Juan
Ink Spot
Black Cherry
Black Magic
