Weed Hound - Dandelion and Weed Control - Quick, Easy, Organic

Keeping weeds like dandelions and other broadleaf weeds are the bane of many homeowners. How best to control them is a problem, as we become more aware of the problems with chemical controls like pesticides, we would like to take an organic approach to weed control, but the reality is that it seems like a lot of work, and too often simply pulling the weeds is ineffective since the root can often remain to grow again. Here’s a look at the Weed Hound, a device that promises effective organic weed control without all the work.

The basic idea of the Weed Hound is to drill a short distance down with a foot operated plunger, and with a simple twist to pull the root of the weed out. The advantages of this approach are include:

  • Goes deep to get the root
  • Chemical free
  • Aerates the soil
  • No large holes or divots in the lawn
  • Tempered steel tool lasts a long time
  • No bending or stopping to pull the weeds

The video shows the Hound Hog in action. As you can see, the operation is simple. You just center the tool over the middle of the weed, press it in with your foot on the plunger, give it a twist with the handle, and pull the weed out. The plunger also ejects the weed, so you don’t have to bend or stoop to clear it our either. The actual weed pulling part is a set of six tines that twist down around the root, which works fairly effectively.

You may find for large weeds that you have to do it more than once. A couple of things to remember: pulling weeds is easier when the soil is moist, even with a tool like this, and make sure to get to the weed before it starts maturing the seeds, or you will just have to come back.

For very large roots you may have to fill in the hole, even though the tool may just pull up the root, if the root is huge you still end up with a hole that needs some work.

The reviews of the Weed Hound on Amazon are generally very positive. The few complaints were that for very tall people there was some bending required to used the tool, and for very deep rooted weeds it didn’t always get the entire root. This makes sense, there will always will be roots deeper than your design, it may be the best answer to that is weed earlier.

Overall, this looks to be a good answer to those looking for effective organic lawn weed control. The concept is straightforward, and experience shows that it works.

I have had the weed hound for a few years now, and found it has a few problems. It has failed to work very well over time due to the metal tines bending beyond repair, and also being hard at times to eject the weed from the tines. After a while, your hand will get sore from pushing in the weed ejector handle.

It is an effective tool, but it isn’t quite as easy to use as it has been made to appear.
