Birdhouse Kits - Building a Birdhouse with Your Children

If you’ve got kids, one simple activity that you can spend some time doing with them is to build a birdhouse. A simple birdhouse shouldn’t take more than one afternoon to put together, and the result will be around for years to come, and your unique birdhouse can be a conversation piece for other guests as well.

If you’re into trying to attract birds to your yard, building a bird house is a wonderful children’s activity. One very easy way to get started is to use a birdhouse kit. Some simpler models of birdhouses are offered for sale in the toys and games sections of your favorite retailers. Usually cut into a simple wood pattern, these are easily assembled. Some require nails (and some even come with the nails) while others are glued together. Since they are made of wood, painting them is a simple way to dress the birdhouses up, and create a unique design that is yours alone.

You can also find some more advanced kits from retailers as well. Some of these retailers suggest these as an activity for a scout group or as a fundraiser.

Finally, if you are looking for something a little larger or impressive, there are always birdhouse plans. These plans often come in a book of several designs, so a single purchase can give you access to a range of plans, from simple ones that can be built in a single afternoon with your children, to more complex houses that border on works of art that can be a longer term project that the whole family can enjoy.

You can also tailor the design for the specific species of birds that you would like to attract. A couple of books specifically call out designs by species.

If you like the idea of building a birdhouse from plans, some of these books also include ideas for bird feeders and other birding projects.
