Junebearing Strawberries - A look at June Bearing Strawberry Varieties

There are three types of strawberries that are commonly grown: Junebearing, everbearing, and day neutral. But the most popular are the June bearing strawberries.

June bearing are the best type to grow if you are looking for the biggest and juiciest strawberries. Sometimes referred to as spring bearing, these strawberries will typically have a burst of productivity, bearing fruit over a period of just a few weeks, normally in June in much of the country. They are also sometimes classified into early, mid-season, and late varieties, and with a mix of these you can spread the strawberry harvest out to more than just the 3 weeks you may get from a single variety.

They produce the fruit flowers and runners, and these runners are encouraged to grow so that the strawberry bed is denser and more productive the 2nd year and beyond. Because they spread more, June bearing strawberries are typically the ones used for the traditional strawberry bed, and not as much for container or hanging planters. They also tend to handle hot temperatures better, and in some areas of the country where there is a lot of heat they are grown as annuals and no attempt is made to have them weather the hot and dry extremes of the southwest summers.

There are many different varieties of June bearing strawberries. A few varieties include Earliglow, Annapolis, Delmarvel, Allstar, Brunswick, Chandler, Honeoye, Kent, Lateglow, Mohawk, Sable, Seneca, and Winona. Sequoia is one of the standby varieties for use in home strawberry patches.

Check with your nursery or seed catalog to see which might be best suited for your locale.

We live in Clearwater Idaho, about 2700 ft in elevation. It can get to 20 below for periods of time. What do we need to do to protect our strawberries in the winter? We have an everbearing type and a June bearing type, hoods I believe.

I would like to find “Earliglow” strawberry plants to set out in October, not in the Spring.Commercial growers do this every year in our area, and produce great crops the following June. Why am I unable to find Strawberry plants for fall delivery?
