Garden Hose Reels - A Look at Garden Hose Storage and Holders

Garden hose storage is one of those tools that almost all gardeners run into at one time or another. You can find garden hose reels or simple hose holders, but there are a lot of other options for hose storage. Here’s a look at some of the choices you have in garden hose reels and other types of hose storage. You’ll find options that are simply functional, or many that add a decorative touch to the yard or garden.

The easiest thing to do is to make the hose take up less space. This is where the idea for flat garden hoses came from. These hoses are typically made of what looks like several smaller tubes laid in a row, so the hose tends to be flatter, and should roll up easier. Most often these come on their own reel, and are relatively easy to roll up and store. The downside is that the volume and pressure you can get out of long run of these flat hoses is not as good as a larger garden hose, but for many or even most uses they are fine.

One very popular type of hose storage are the powered hose reels. Also called no crank hoses, basically, the hose reel is supposed to do the work of reeling the hose back in for you. The power to do this can come from the water pressure or a simple spring that winds up as you unwind the hose.

If you are wanting portable storage, there are a number of hose reel carts. These carts make it handy to take the hose where you need it, or simply make the job of winter storage a lot simpler (it’s not good for a hose with water in it to go through a hard freeze, especially if it’s connected at the faucet.)

There are a number of wall mounted hose reels. Many are just simple storage, but there are a whole host of decorative designs that range from ornate patterns to creatures like frogs and butterflies or plants like lily pads and flowers.

One of the most useful designs are the free standing hose reels. Some models of these have a faucet built into the stand, so with a little PVC you can create a watering station right near the garden. If you have a sprinkler system this may be less work than you feared.
