Indoor Greenhouses - Mini Greenhouses For Plants and Seedlings

Indoor greenhouses are a great way to increase the things you can grow in your home. They are great for extending your garden season, or simply growing plants that you couldn’t grow outside in your area. Finally, use them to start your garden seedlings inside. This allows you to choose when you start your garden, or to get fall plants started when the nurseries have stopped stocking seedlings, and it gives you the ability to choose from any plants you want, instead of just the 3 or 4 varieties of tomatoes or peppers that the local nursery stocks.

Windowsill greenhouse - The simplest type of indoor greenhouse is just a simple box on the windowsill. These can be under $10, and are great for starting seedlings. Put it where it gets good sunlight, keep it watered, and they often come with peat pellets or some similar starting medium. Usually they have a cover to maintain the moisture levels, and some come with a small heating element that you can put under it to keep the temperature at an optimum level if you choose to put it in the garage or basement.

Another popular style is to simply use a set of shelves with a grow light to create the desired light level. This doesn’t really allow you to control temperature or humidity levels, so it is limited in what can be grown, but it works well if your biggest limitation is the lighting level.

The ultimate in indoor greenhouses are what are sometimes called growing racks. These look like a typical size set of white bookshelves, but they typically have some type of plastic covering that will help keep the temperature and humidity more constant. With built in lighting, these are attractive enough that you can use them to feature your indoor plants, but they also can be put in the basement or garage if your main goal is to use them to start seedlings for the garden. You can find them in 2, 3 or 4 rack models, so you can set them on the floor or on a table or other support for the smaller models. There are corner units as well that give you more flexibility on where you put it.
