Garden Cart - A Review of Lawn Garden Carts

A garden cart is a great tool or even a gift for your favorite gardener. But there is a wide array of different garden carts on the market today. Here is a look at the different types of lwn garden carts, and which are best suited for a variety of gardening chores.

There are a number of different uses for garden carts. Some are mostly decorative, and serve to hold plants and planters for display in the yard or on the patio and deck. These sometimes look more like shelves and a display stand than a cart.

Utility carts - These are the workhorses of the gardener. Garden carts are great for moving all sorts of items needed in the garden. Bags of soil, rotted manure, or compost can be taken from the driveway to the garden. Moving tools of all sorts, or yard refuse that needs to find its way to the garden composter.

Some carts are big enough that they need to be pulled by a tractor or a riding mower, and may be big enough to hold a tree or two.

The size of a cart is usually rated in cubic feet. To give you some idea, of course a cart 2 feet deep, by 2 feet widek byt 3 feet long would be 12 cubic feet, which is a larger cart.

Some carts, like the Suncast garden center, are more like tool caddies, with a large number of hangers and holes to hold your trowele, hand spade, garden rake and other tools. It is quite handy to have near the garden, but is not suited for hauling a large load of refuse. You’ll also find some like the gardeners.com variety that holds a hose as one of the tools.

One common feature on large carts are the drop down sides. Thes make it easier to load and unload larger heavier items on the cart, while keeping them secure while hauling.

One other very popular style is a dump cart. SImilar to a wheelbarrow in style, they usually have 2 wheels instead of the one of a wheelbarrow, and a garden cart will have higher sides to hold a larger volume. Typically you will be hauling things not as dense as the dirt or cement you would haul with a wheelbarrow. Look for larger wheels on a dump cart, as this makes it easier to roll heavier items. Some carts will have 2 sets of wheels, one larger, and a smaller set to allow you to roll the cart and not support one end like a wheelbarrow.

Finally, there are carts that are simply decorative. These garden carts don’t hold any plants, or haul any garden tools or plants, but just serve to dress up the garden area with a little color.
