Garden Fences - A Review of Garden Fencing Choices

Garden fences have a variety of functions in the garden. You may be interested primarily in keeping critters like rabbits or deer (or turtles or cats and dogs) out of the garden simply to protect your garden produce. Or you may want to look at garden fencing as a part of your overall landscaping theme, where you want to add some character to the vegetable or flower garden. Here is a look at a number of garden fencing options.

If you just want to keep the critters out and aren’t too concerned about the look of the fencing, there are some special garden fences that look like construction fencing. Instead of being orange and several feet in height, this comes in rolls and is often sold labeled as rabbit fencing and is usually green or black. Looks like a plastic version of the traditional chicken fencing, it comes in rolls that are typically 2 to 4 feet in height, and can be held in place with stakes ( or short sections of rebar) or even some leftover tomato stakes.

Three are a number of other styles of garden fences that are more attractive and could be considered part of your garden landscape.

Some of these are more decorative than they are functional, in that a small critter like a rabbit or a cat would have no problem getting to your garden. Others fences present more of an obstacle, but are still attractive. The low wooden fence can do both, and in particular a cedar wooden fence will weather well and can last a long time with some care.

A classic look is the picket fence. These can be found in the traditional wooden fence, but there are some vinyl fencing products that will last a long time and don’t need to be repainted every few years. In a somewhat similar vein, bamboo fencing has a natural look and will last a long time.

Wrought iron fences are among the sturdiest. Properly installed, these can last for decades, and wrought iron fences can be seen in some of the nicer gardens around the country. This is an investment that will last for a lifetime.
