Garden Kneelers and Garden Seats – The Best Garden Kneeler Features

Anyone who spends a lot of time in the garden knows that many times we have to stop before we are ready because of all the time stooping and kneeling can be hard on the back or the knees. One handy garden tool to deal with this is a garden kneeler or garden seat. Here is a look at the different kneelers and seats on the market, and some features you might want to make sure you have.

The simplest kneeler is basically just a foam pad. Usually these are covered with a plastic coating so you can put it in the dirt and have it clean up easily. These work fine to keep your knees clean and cushion your knees, but don’t do much to help with getting up and down. Make sure you get a good quality pad, some of the imported pads aren’t really thick enough to actually do a good job of cushioning your knees.

Related to these are garden knee pads, like the ones made by Fiskars. These knee pads strap to your knees, and you just wear them and they are in place so you don’t have to tote around a pad and put it down wherever you move.

The next step up from this is basically one of these foam pads with a frame to hold the kneeler. These have handles on the side, so you can use the handles to get up and down onto the kneeler, cutting down on the stooping and climbing up. Typically the kneeling pad is suspended above the ground slightly, so you don’t have to go as deep to kneel. These are pretty handy, are relatively low cost, and lightweight enough that you can carry them easily. Many types will fold up for easier carrying and storage, so you don’t have to wrestle with a big frame. Be sure that the kneeler you choose will support the weight you will be putting on it. Most of them can be flipped over and used as seat as well.

Finally there are garden seats that cut out a lot of the kneeling. One popular seat looks like a small garden cart with wheels but a seat in the middle instead of a cart. Another really popular one is a combination kneeler with a seat that you can sit back on while kneeling on the kneeler. This takes a lot of the stress off your back but still gets you low to the ground so you can work in the garden.
